December 21, 2012 … countdown to the end of the world

The Mayan calendar stops exactly 5 years from today on 21 December 2012 - and the Mayans aren’t too clear on what happens after that. 

There are all kinds of theories – one popular one being that is the exact date when the solar system drifts across the galactic plane, and the sun, earth and the centre of the galaxy align, causing nasty things to happen on earth. So the Mayans figured this out with sticks and rocks did they?  Well they also smoked and drank some pretty strange shit.  Do you think that just maybe? …

 Now what I really think happened is that the calendar project lost its funding.  Why should their government be any different?  “OK Kotextli, wrap it up, there’s no more money.  Where’s the next solstace on this fucking rock – winter 2012?  Fine, just do that, clean up the stone chips, and we’re out of here.  Choclatl party – my place – sunset.  Bring your own booty.”

Galaxy, shmalaxy.  If I were betting man, I’d wager that on 22 December 2012 you’ll see a lot of red faces and big hang-overs after those end-of-world parties. ”Ah shit, dude, that’s funny – you just quit your investment banking job.  So how come you’re laughing?  … I married who?”   And for the ones that shoot themselves to pre-empt fate … there will still be the  Darwin Awards.

Notwithstanding, it’s interesting to ponder on what the next 5 years will bring, and what one wants to accomplish in that time.  I will be doing a little of that.
