TU#115 – yesterday’s news

Due to a severe temporary drinking problem, yesterday’s trading updates are being presented today.  Today I did not sell the last of my leveraged ag ETF (TSX:HAU) to buy more short gold shares ETF (TSX:HGD), and I also didn’t sell some long gold shares ETF (TSX:HGU) to buy FTSE Xinhua (pronounced “footsie shinwaa”), the Chinese blue [...]

“… no Americans in Baghdad!” :)

In the early 200o’s I used to correspond with Bill Hanley, a financial writer who had regular financial columns in the National Post, and would write silly little skits and commentaries as part of that correspondence.  One time I also submitted a sketch idea for the Canadian comedy show Air Farce.  The context at the [...]

Testing RSS

Hi guys,
This is just a short test of my RSS subscription widget in the right hand column.
I’ve just bought a new computer, and this version of Outlook has a feature that lists all of your RSS (Really Simple Syndication) feeds automatically when you subscribe to them.  (It’s like one of your email folders).   Internet Explorer 7 also [...]

TU#114; Christmas trades in the oil patch

After a pretty quiet couple of days, my REAP system has drifted into two more re-allocation trades on a sleepy Christmas Eve morning.  As I look outside a few flakes of snow are starting to flutter downward, completing the lazy mood.
Energy, oil at least, is completely in the toilet now.  After yet another unexpected inventory increase, [...]

TU#113; one trade today – should’a been more

There was one REAP re-allocation trade, but there could have been more yesterday – two nice ones involving gold – had the TSX been OPEN.   (Some piece of network gear took it down for the whole day.)  Yesterday saw a huge surge in gold and gold stocks, and it would have been the perfect opportunity [...]

On Minneapolis, and a very unique client

I was just corresponding with Jeff Watson, my trader friend who was for many years a successful grain trader on the floor of the Minneapolis Grain Exchange.  Jeff, who still owns seats there is returning this week to participate in the last day (ever) of open-outcry trading at the MGEX.  If you’ve ever seen the movie “Trading Places” [...]

TU#112; the oil pop I’ve been waiting for

The very tiny oil pop.  At least it was enough to create a sell-side trade in the oil ETF.  As commodities moved higher again a bit today, with gold and oil doing so more significantly, three of the four ETFs trading today were commodity ETFs.

Uncle Matt’s movie

On a snowy Saturday afternoon, we rustled up the family and a couple of the kids’ friends into two carloads, and went to see the 4:40 showing of  “Outsourced” a great little comedy about a call centre manager (Todd) who gets sent from Seattle to India to train his replacement and the new Indian staff.   The story [...]

President Bush survives shoe attack

This evening at a press conference in Iraq, an Egyptian journalist threw two shoes at George Bush in rapid-fire succession, which the president deftly avoided.
Given the lackadaisical Secret Service response – no agents dived to take a shoe for the president, nor returned fire with their own shoes – the breakdown in security was considered complete, and [...]

Charles Ponzi’s legacy alive and well, or … how good guys get into trouble, or … I was also a rogue trader

This morning as I headed off to work, in my parka, on foot (thanks to our transit strike), I was thinking “OK, this is going to hurt.”  The S&P500 had been down as much as 37 points in pre-market trading, on the double-whammy news that (1) Bernie Madoff, electronic markets pioneer, ex-chairman of the NASDAQ, [...]
